Prepare your questions before choosing a clinic
The UK General Dental Council publishes guidance for patients considering dental treatment abroad. Its checklist asks about the dentist's qualifications, the treatment process, risks, aftercare and what happens if something goes wrong. These questions can help structure a discussion with any prospective provider.
- Who will examine you and carry out the proposed treatment?
- Where will treatment take place?
- What qualifications and registration details can the treating dentist provide?
- Who can you contact during the trip and after returning home?
Understand the treatment proposal
Ask the treating dentist to explain the diagnosis, available options and the implications of each option for your circumstances. The General Dental Council's standards on informed consent describe the importance of discussing treatment options, risks, benefits and costs, and giving patients the opportunity to ask questions.

Prepare your questions in writing. If you need an interpreter, ask how communication will be arranged. A price list or a conversation about photographs can help you prepare questions; the treating dentist should confirm an individual plan after the necessary assessment.
Compare the scope of the offer
When requesting a proposal, ask for the included treatment steps, materials and appointments to be listed clearly. Separately ask whether travel, accommodation, translation or later appointments are included. Keep the written proposal so you can discuss changes before agreeing to them.
A comparison is more useful when the same proposed work and responsibilities are clear. An advertised starting price alone does not describe your individual treatment plan.
Plan aftercare before travelling
The GDC's guidance recommends asking what aftercare is provided and what happens if there is a problem after treatment. Ask who is responsible, how follow-up is arranged, and which costs you would need to cover. Request any guarantee conditions in writing, including exclusions and the process for requesting a review.
